Basal Cuttings

Basal cuttings have to be one of my favourite types of cuttings.

After their period of dormancy, plants awaken with a burst of stored energy. This is the golden hour for propagators, an opportunity to take quick, strong rooting cuttings while the plants are full of vitality.

Using a sharp knife, carefully slice just below the soil line. The lower leaves are stripped away, then nestle them into a well-drained cuttings mix. I like to use the back of a paint brush as it's perfecly shaped for the job.

They will root in a few weeks time, given a little warmth in a bright glasshouse or cold frame.

Its possible to use this method for many plants, such Aster, Phlox, Chrysanthemum

Teucrium hircanicum
